    Last Post, Menin Gate

We leave St Pancras by Eurostar to Lille. Here we board a coach for the journey to Ypres, where we check in to the 3-star Novotel Ypres Centrum. After dinner your Tour Manager will lead the group on a short walk to the Menin Gate to witness the Last Post ceremony.

  • Day 2-3 - Behind the Lines and "In Flanders Fields"

This morning we board a coach for a tour of the area behind the front line of fighting in WW1. Our first stop is Essex Farm Cemetery, where Colonel John McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields" - one of the most famous poems from the First World War. Our tour continues to Lijssenthoek cemetery, site of a former Military hospital and the second largest British Military cemetery in Belgium. Our final visit is to the town of Poperinge, a gateway to the battlefields for reinforcements arriving from Great Britain. Here we visit Talbot House, an "everyman's club" where officers and other soldiers of all ranks could relax together away from the horrors of the front. We return to Ypres by train from Poperinge. On Day 3 we visit the "In Flanders Fields" Museum, in the Cloth Hall. The remainder of the day is free.

    Days 2-3 - Breakfast

  • Days 4-5 - Hooge Crater, Passchendaele and Tyne Cot

    Tyne Cot Cemetery

Our full-day coach excursion today takes us to some of the region's best-known WW1 sights, museums and memorials. Our first stop is the Hooge Crater Museum, which has some superb collections, including military artefacts, displays and First World War uniforms. We then visit the Passchendaele Memorial Museum, which is focussed on the events of the Third Battle of Ypres, one of the bloodiest battles of WW1. Within the basement of the museum are full-scale replica dugouts, chambers and trenches which provide a realistic impression of how life was for those on the front line. Finally we visit Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest commonwealth cemetery in Belgium. This evening we dine in a local restaurant. On Day 5 we travel by coach to Lille, pausing en route to visit the Bayernwald Trenches. The open-air museum encompasses a complete network of original, re-dug German WW1 trenches. We continue by coach to Lille and board the Eurostar to London.
