Day 2

Railway excursion to the city of Bath

Today we visit Bath, the spectacular Georgian show-piece city. Due to its array of architectural wonders, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on arrival we enjoy a guided tour of the famous Roman Baths. Built to harness the city's supply of thermal springs, the baths offer a detailed insight into Roman daily life. We explore the well-preserved ancient complex, in addition to the decorative 12th century flourishes of the King's Bath. You are then free to explore the city; admire the Grand Pump Room, or take in the elegant Assembly Rooms, which both feature in the Jane Austen novel Northanger Abbey. Other highlights include Bath Abbey, the beautiful Pulteney Bridge and of course the honey-stoned Royal Crescent - arguably the emblem of this stunning city. We return to Bristol by rail.

Includes:
  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Visit to Bath
Lacock Abbey
Day 3

The Avon Valley Railway and Lacock

This morning we head by coach to Bitton, where we join the heritage Avon Valley Railway for a nostalgic journey through the charming scenery of South Gloucestershire. Later we continue to Lacock, an idyllic medieval village that has undergone very little change in centuries. Crammed with rustic stone cottages, timber-framed houses and crooked winding lanes, the village is almost untouched by modern development; there are no phone masts or electric streetlights. Many period dramas, such as the BBC versions of Pride & Prejudice and Cranford, have been filmed here. During our time in Lacock, we visit Lacock Abbey; its atmospheric cloisters are a delight to wander around. You will also wish to take a stroll through the thatch-roofed village, with its quirky tearooms and attractive shops, before we return to Bristol by coach.

The West Somerset Railway

This morning we travel by coach to Bishops Lydeard, located at the foot of the Quantock Hills, to join the fantastic West Somerset Railway. This is the UK's longest stretch of private heritage railway, operated by a dedicated army of almost 1,000 volunteers. Our journey takes us to Dunster, to visit Dunster Castle, perched dramatically atop a wooded hill. After breakfast on Day 5, you are free to depart at leisure.

Includes:
  • Excursions
  • Day 4 - Breakfast, dinner
  • Day 5 - Breakfast
