After making Cologne on the first day, we take one of the great single train rides, down the Rhine and across Switzerland, to reach Chur.
Chur and Brig are delightful small towns with interesting old areas, atmosphere and great transport links. We take fantastic train journeys on iconic routes, with options to go higher by mountain railway and cable car, and to sit above the glaciers and stare at the Matterhorn while Alpine Choughs try to steal our lunch.
Switzerland's extensive, efficient and integrated transport system, and a Swiss Travel Pass give lots of options for free days. My customer free day record is from Brig, via the Centovalli line, to Locarno, (steamer trip on Lake Maggiore), trains on to Lucerne, Bern, and back to Brig. Beat that!
