To further enhance its range of tours to UK destinations for 2009, Great Rail Journeys - the UK market leading tour operator for escorted holidays by rail - has introduced three new short break itineraries - featuring one each in Scotland, England and Wales.
The six-day 'Highland Adventure', for example, is based in Inverness with highlights including scenic journeys - taking in spectacular mountain landscapes - on the Strathspey Steam Railway and Kyle Line (or Skye Railway) as well as a relaxing cruise from Inverness to Loch Ness through the Caledonian Canal followed by a visit to Urquhart Castle.
Available with selected departures between June and October, the cost is from £478 inclusive of five nights accommodation at the Palace Hotel with breakfast each day, four dinners, a Highland Rover pass, excursions as per itinerary, plus the services of a Tour Manager throughout (travel to Scotland is extra).
Also new is a six-day 'Railways & Castles of Wales' holiday which is based in Llandudno - staying at the four-star St George's Hotel - and includes highlights such as journeys on the Snowdon Mountain, Welsh Highland and Festiniog Railways, guided tours of Penrhyn Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Conwy Castle, visits to Bodnant Gardens and the Italianate coastal village of Portmeirion as well as enjoying an evening recital by the Conwy Welsh Male Voice Choir.
Available with selected departures between June and October the cost is £598.
Turning to England, the new seven-day 'Yorkshire Moors & the Lake District' tour includes a full programme of excursions such as a guided walking tour of York, journeys on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - including free time in Whitby - and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway through the Leven Valley, a Lake Windermere boat trip, plus trips on the Settle to Carlisle and Cumbrian Coast railways.
