The tiny village of Svirstroy is located on the Svir River, about 150 miles east of St. Petersburg. The Svir runs between Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga - two of the largest lakes in Europe. The village is home to about 1000 residents, many of whom work in building and craft-based trades.
The village's pretty centre is characterised by authentic wooden kiosk shops, some of which sell traditional Russian handicrafts and artwork. Surrounded by wonderful riverside views, Svirstroy has retained the feel of a typical, unspoilt village, making it a great place to wander around.
