Meersburg, the "Burg on the lake", is located directly across from the town of Constance (Konstanz) on the shores of Lake Constance. The town comprises two distinct areas: the lower town ("Unterstadt") and uptown ("Oberstadt"), which are connected by stairs or a steep street.
The New Palace (Neues Schloss), is an elegant palace that once served as the residence palace of the prince-bishops of Constance. The palace faces the Schlossplatz, forming the southern boundary of the square. Construction began in 1712 and finished in 1740. A tour of the palace takes you into the living quarters and showcases the painting gallery and the Dornier Museum, which is dedicated to the history of aviation (the Lake Constance area was a hotbed of Zeppelin development).
The Old Palace (Altes Schloss) is a privately owned medieval castle that was a successful defender of Meersburg. The narrative of the self-guided tour is all about knights and weapons of war. The Bible Gallery includes exhibits of Bibles and of the Gutenburg Press, the first printing press that made copies of the Bible.
Other museums in Meersburg include Meersburg Tapestry Art Museum, the Droste Museum, the Town Museum, and a Viticulture Museum (wine is a very important part of the culture of Meersburg; the local "Weissherbst" wine grows on the northern slopes of Lake Constance). Like many of the local towns and villages, Meersburg is full of well-kept half-timbered houses and has interesting town gates.
