The 'city of long-lasting peace', Xi'an is an ancient city and
the starting point of the world-famous Silk Road. Xi'an has over
3,000 years of history and is one of the Four Great Ancient
Capitals of China, serving as capital for 73 emperors across 13
dynasties. It is regarded as the founding city of Chinese
civilisation. The city has approximately 12km of city walls. The
ancient walls were built 600 years ago and are an excellent way to
navigate around the city.
Among the most popular of Xi'an's attractions is the Mausoleum
of the First Qin Emperor, better known as the Terracotta
Warriors. The Xiaoyan Pagoda ("Small Wild Goose Pagoda") is a
beautiful pagoda built to hold holy Buddhist scriptures carried to
China. The Dayan Pagoda (Giant Wild Goose Pagoda) is taller than
the Xiaoyan Pagoda, but with fewer floors. It was built to hold
figurines of Buddhism brought to China.
