The Oberammergau 2020 Passion Play is an example of the Mystery Play which is one of the oldest forms of organised theatre in Europe. Between the tenth and sixteenth century, before the rise of professional theatre and mass literacy, these curious plays developed out of the need to pass biblical stories down the generations. Whole communities would take part in a series of sketches which would be performed in front of a mass audience. As the Mystery Play was a highly local art form, different versions were prevalent in different regions, each with their own idiosyncrasies that provide a slightly different telling of the events outlined in the Bible. The Oberammergau 2020 Passion Play is a continuation of this fine tradition and a spectacle in its own right. Enjoy the comfort and convenience of travelling to Oberammergau by train.
