Itinerary
Meeting our fellow travellers and Tour Manager at London Heathrow this morning, this incredible adventure gets under way immediately as we board a flight across the Atlantic to Calgary. Arriving around midday local time, we leave this shimmering city of the Canadian west to travel into the Rockies by coach.
Travelling along the Trans-Canada Highway, we pass through Native American reservations, before the imposing foothills of the Rocky Mountains gather round the route. Our destination is Banff, a quintessential Rockies town nestled beneath the imposing Cascade Mountain. We check into our hotel in mid-afternoon and the rest of the day is free to spend as you wish.
As one of the main tourist destinations in the Canadian Rockies, there are many things to do in Banff, with many shops and restaurants in its walkable town centre. Dining independently this evening, you could pop into one of the attractive eateries for some hearty and warming food.

The trip was excellent, the train journey was great, though if you blinked you may miss any of the wildlife. Two days was sufficient. The wait to get into Vancouver Station (1.5hrs), literally sitting outside as freight trains take priority, was tiresome and somewhat spoiled the last day. Alaska trip was first cruise and I wouldn't say I'm a fan as felt cooped up on board (didn't help that we were ill for two days as were a lot of people on the ship - germs spread fast). HOWEVER, it was an amazing experience.

Rocky Mountaineer was excellent, the Alaska Cruise a curate’s egg. Alaska cruise, mediocre entertainment, variable service and expensive excursions. The talks were excellent and food good. Skagway was not visited with an interesting excuse. Haines was a poor substitute, the guy taking the tour asked us, ‘What is the itinerary?’ Tour manager very efficient.
